Lesson 1 - Introduction

The Purpose of Business

The purpose of business is to provide for the needs of the world by serving customers and creating meaningful work, while giving glory to God.

Jeff Haanen, Founder of Denver Institute for Faith & Work

Genesis 1-3

Jeff describes how "work brings creation from good to very good." The Genesis narrative teaches us that work is a gift from God, and that our unique purpose is to steward and cultivate God's creation (see Genesis 1-2).

In Genesis 3, we see that humanity's rebellion fractures our relationship with God—part of the consequence is that our work becomes broken and cursed:

17 Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

Genesis 3:17b-19 NIV

As an entrepreneur, you may resonate deeply with both the brokenness of the creation and with humanity's purpose to make creation better. As you begin this course, take a moment to reflect on your work as an entrepreneur. What is your purpose and motivation? What keeps you going even when work becomes difficult?

Who Are You Becoming?

Entrepreneurs are known for their determination, passion, and hard-work, but these things often come at the expense of physical, relational, and spiritual health. As you continue this course, the primary topic will be caring for the souls of entrepreneurs. You will be learning from a panel of successful entrepreneurs about remaining spiritually healthy in the midst of the immense pressure entrepreneurs face.

Before starting the next lesson, spend some time reflecting on and answering these questions:

  • In what ways does my work negatively impact my relationships with family and friends?
  • In what ways does my work negatively impact my relationship with God?
  • How do I prioritize my time between work, family, physical health, and spiritual health?

Have you ever felt a sense of angst and restlessness regarding your work? Have you ever wondered if you were doing what God has called you to do?
Our mission is to help people connect the dots between their faith and work, to help them learn that their work truly matters to God. Will you help support us in this mission?
